SEO vs Google Ads in Singapore: Which Comes First?

Put your next dollar into Google Ads if you need enquiries this month, and into SEO if your customers search for the same things every month and you can wait several months for a page to rank. We set Ahrefs' cost per click for eight Singapore searches against our first client's Search Console, which went from 1 click in June 2026 to 64 in September.

In short
  • 01Ahrefs estimates a Google Ads click in Singapore at US$1.30 for "renovation contractor singapore" to US$6.00 for "corporate secretarial services singapore" across the eight owner searches we pulled on 3 October 2026. Google's systems are designed to stop showing a campaign's ads once it hits its spending limit.
  • 02On the seven of those searches with a click estimate, Ahrefs puts the share of searchers who clicked only unpaid results at 38% to 57%, and the share who clicked only an ad at 3% to 13%.
  • 03Our first client's new site went from 1 click from Google in June 2026 to 7, 29 and 64 in the next three months, as the pages Google showed grew from 5 to 55. Google charges nothing for a place in its free results.
  • 04Google says advertising with it "won't have any effect on your site's presence in our search results". We do SEO and do not run Google Ads.

Put your next dollar into Google Ads if you need enquiries this month, and into SEO if your customers search for the same things every month and you can wait several months for a page to rank. Ads stop bringing clicks when the budget runs out, while a page that ranks keeps collecting clicks with no fee for each one.

Neither is free. Google Ads bills you each time someone clicks your ad, and SEO costs the research, writing and fixes it takes to get a page ranked, paid for through an agency's fee or your own hours. We are an SEO agency and we do not run Google Ads, so we earn nothing from an ad budget. Weigh what we say about the SEO side with that in mind.

What does a Google Ads click cost in Singapore?

A click on an ad for "movers singapore" costs about US$4.00, by the estimate of the SEO tool Ahrefs. We pulled Ahrefs' figures on 3 October 2026 for eight searches people in Singapore type when they are looking for a business. Ahrefs describes its cost per click as "the estimated bid (in US dollars) for a given keyword in Google Ads" and says the figure "should be treated as an average". It also says it refreshes those figures "once in a few months", and that the most accurate numbers come from Google Ads itself.

SearchSearches a monthCost per clickSearchers who clicked only an adSearchers who clicked only unpaid results

corporate secretarial services singapore900US$6.00No estimateNo estimate

Every figure in the table is an Ahrefs estimate. The last two columns come from the clickstream data Ahrefs uses to estimate what people click after they search.

As an example, 100 clicks a month on "movers singapore" at US$4.00 comes to about US$400 a month, and the bill comes again every month the ads run. Google's help pages say its systems are designed to stop showing ads once a campaign hits its spending limit, and that paused ads stop accruing charges.

On every search in the table with a click estimate, more people clicked only unpaid results than clicked only an ad. For "aircon servicing singapore", Ahrefs puts it at 50% against 8%, with another 10% clicking both and the other 32% clicking neither.

All eight searches also showed Google's map results when Ahrefs last checked them, between 11 August and 28 September 2026. The figures we pulled do not split unpaid clicks between the map and ordinary website links, so we cannot tell you how much of that 50% went to each.

What does SEO bring in during the first months?

Our first client, Lullaflex, came to us with nothing online, and we built their site from scratch. The domain was registered at the end of May 2026. The site got 1 click from Google in June 2026 and 64 in September, and none of those clicks was billed. Search Console counts clicks from Google's free results, and Google's own comparison of SEO and PPC says "There's no cost to appear in organic search results like Google's." In September, a guide comparing eight HDB layout planning tools brought 23 clicks on its own, at an average position of 6.1.

Google's SEO Starter Guide says "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months" (Google Search Central). The month-by-month figures, and what to check at each stage, are in our guide to how long SEO results take in Singapore.

The pages behind those clicks still took work to research, write and fix. To set that work against an ad budget, our guide to what an SEO retainer costs in Singapore lists the packages Singapore agencies publish and what each one includes.

Does running Google Ads help your SEO?

No. Google's page on hiring an SEO says "Advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in our search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results" (Do you need an SEO?, last updated 5 June 2026). The Google Ads help centre says the same from the other side: "Investment in paid search has no impact on your organic search ranking" (About measuring paid and organic search results).

Ads can still shape what you build. The search terms report in Google Ads shows the searches that triggered your ads, and Google says it helps you "discover new ideas for creative and landing page content". A search that keeps bringing paying customers through an ad is a strong candidate for a page of its own.

Google's SEO Starter Guide lists social media promotion, advertising and word of mouth among the ways to help people and search engines discover a site faster. Google does not document likes or posting frequency as direct ranking factors, which we covered in our check of whether social posting helps Google rankings.

When are Google Ads the better buy?

Ads win when you need enquiries this month. Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day. A page written today still has to be found and ranked, and our first client's site got one click from Google in its first full month.

They also win when the offer has an end date. A six-week promotion or a seasonal service can be over before a new page ranks, and ads can run for exactly those weeks and be paused after.

Run ads first when you want to know which searches turn into customers before you pay for pages. With enquiries tracked as conversions, a month or two of ads shows in the search terms report which searches bring enquiries and which only bring clicks.

Ads are also the quicker route when big brands or directories hold the unpaid results for your main search. A small site may need a long time to climb past them, while an ad can show on the same results page once it is approved.

When is SEO worth it for a small business?

SEO is worth it when people search for what you sell every month. Ahrefs estimates 4,100 searches a month for "aircon servicing singapore". That demand returns month after month, and a page that ranks for it collects its share of the clicks without a fee for each one.

It also makes sense when clicks are expensive for what a customer is worth to you. Work out how many clicks it takes to win one customer, then multiply by the cost per click. For example, if it took 20 clicks, Ahrefs' US$6.00 estimate for "corporate secretarial services singapore" would put each new client at US$120 in clicks before they had paid you anything.

Questions customers ask before they buy are the third case. Most of our first client's September clicks went to guides on bed sizes and HDB layouts, and pages like these can also be quoted by AI assistants. ChatGPT recommended our first client within two months of the site going live, which we wrote up in how our first client got cited by ChatGPT.

SEO is the wrong buy for a business that needs customers this month. It is also the wrong buy for a service nobody searches for yet, and so is a search ad, since neither has a search to appear on.

Is SEO the same as SEM?

SEM stands for search engine marketing. Singapore agencies use the term in two ways. When we checked Singapore results on 3 October 2026, one agency on the first page for "sem singapore" called itself "Paid Search Experts", and an agency ranking for "seo vs google ads singapore" linked the words "Google Ads management" to its SEM services page. A Singapore guide on the same first page defines SEM more broadly, as a strategy to make websites more visible in search results. When a quote says SEM, ask whether it covers ads, SEO or both, and how much of the monthly figure is ad spend that goes to Google.

How should a small business split a small budget?

Answer these in order before you split anything.

  1. Do you need enquiries in the next 30 days? The money that has to produce them belongs in ads, and it stops producing them when you stop paying.
  2. Is your Google Business Profile complete? Google says creating one is free and that it appears on Google Search and Maps. Map results showed on all eight searches in our table.
  3. Is Search Console set up in your company's name? It is free, it shows which searches your site already appears for, and it is where SEO progress shows first, in impressions before clicks. Our first client's site was shown 1,091 times in June and clicked once.
  4. Which page will each click land on? An ad and a ranking page both send people to a page, so that page has to answer the search either way.
  5. If you run ads, which searches brought enquiries? Those are the searches worth a page. Deciding which of them a site like yours can realistically win is the job of keyword research.
  6. How will you judge each one? Judge ads on cost per enquiry, month by month. Judge SEO over several months in Search Console, looking at pages shown first, then positions, then clicks. Our guide to what an SEO agency should report every month lists what to ask for.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

Per click, yes, because Google charges nothing for a place in its free results and bills every ad click. Overall it depends on how many clicks your pages win and for how long, since the research, writing and fixes still cost money. Early on, SEO can look worse. Our first client's site got 1 click from Google in June 2026, its first full month, and 64 in September.

Does running Google Ads improve my Google rankings?

No. Google says "Advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in our search results", and its Google Ads help centre says "Investment in paid search has no impact on your organic search ranking." Ads can still help you decide which pages to build, because the search terms report shows the searches that triggered your ads.

How long does SEO take compared with Google Ads?

Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day. For SEO, Google's SEO Starter Guide says "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months." Our first client's site went from 1 click from Google in June 2026 to 7 in July, 29 in August and 64 in September.

Should a small business run Google Ads and SEO at the same time?

Yes, if you need enquiries now and can also fund SEO for several months, because the search terms report from your ads shows which searches deserve a page. If the budget covers only one properly, choose ads when you need customers this month and SEO when your customers search for the same things every month.
