Discord's help article, 7 November 2026: Can my messages appear on the web by default? Yes, in most regions. The Channel Messages setting is on by default, and off by default for accounts in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia or South Korea.

Discord messages Google search change: what to switch off

From 16 November 2026 every Discoverable Server on Discord gets a public web page, and from mid-December some public-channel messages can appear in web search. Who it covers, the settings that switch it off, and why it matters to businesses that never use Discord.

In short

  • Discord announced on 27 October 2026 that every Discoverable Server gets a Server Web Page from 16 November 2026, and that some public-channel messages can appear in web search from mid-December 2026.
  • It covers only Discoverable Servers: at least 1,000 members, at least eight weeks old, listed in Server Discovery. Private servers, DMs and messages sent before mid-December are never included.
  • Members' messages are on by default in Singapore and off by default in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea. Admins switch channels off in Server Settings > Web Presence; members in User Settings > Data & Privacy.
  • Forums already rank: on 26 October 2026 the first restaurant's own site was sixth on Google for "best italian restaurant singapore", under a Reddit thread, the Michelin Guide, Tripadvisor and two lists.

The Discord messages Google search change comes in two steps: from 16 November 2026 every Discoverable Server gets a public web page that search engines can show, and from mid-December 2026 some messages from those servers' public channels can appear on that page and in web search. It covers only Discoverable Servers, the ones listed in Server Discovery, and for members in Singapore it is on unless they switch it off.

Admins can switch channels off now, in Server Settings under Web Presence, and members can turn their own messages off in User Settings under Data & Privacy. At rankr, a Singapore SEO agency, we read Discord's announcement and help articles on 7 November 2026. The last two sections are for businesses that have never opened Discord.

What is changing on Discord, and when?

Discord announced the change on 27 October 2026, in a blog post titled "Making Content from Discoverable Servers Easier to Discover".

DateWhat happens
27 October 2026Admin controls and the member setting go live, before anything is public
16 November 2026Every Discoverable Server has a Server Web Page. If the admins have not published one, Discord builds a default page from the Server Profile. Automated summaries of public channels, which Discord calls Channel Summaries, can start the same day
Mid-December 2026Channel Messages start rolling out: "answers to questions your members sent in public channels can be found in a web search, in their own words"

Discord says the rollout "is gradual, so it may be a few weeks before the first messages start appearing on the web." Messages sent before mid-December 2026 are not included, whatever anyone's settings say.

Discord's blog post "Making Content from Discoverable Servers Easier to Discover" by Kelsey Duncombe-Smith, dated October 27, 2026, with one passage boxed in red: starting November 16, 2026, all Discoverable Servers will have a Server Web Page, and some messages from public channels may show on Server Web Pages and in web search beginning in mid-December 2026.

Which Discord servers and messages are affected?

Only Discoverable Servers. Discord's announcement says that to qualify, "a server needs at least 1,000 members, has to be at least eight weeks old, and must meet activity and safety requirements". Their admins chose to list them in Server Discovery, so anyone can join without an invite link, and Discord puts their number at 63,000.

  • Included: public channels, and threads and forums under a public channel, while the admins leave them switched on. Channels taking part carry a label in the channel header, and members see a pop-up before they post. Messages show as text only, without usernames or avatars.
  • Never included: private servers, DMs and group DMs, private threads and forums, messages sent before mid-December 2026, and accounts in Discord's teen age group.

Whether a member's messages can appear depends on where the account is. Discord's help article "Discoverable Content on the Web" says the member setting is on by default, and off by default "if your account is in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, or South Korea." Singapore is not on that list, so a member in Singapore who changes nothing can have messages shown from mid-December.

If you run the server:

  1. Open Server Settings in Discord's desktop app or in a browser. Discord says the Server Web Page settings are not in the mobile app.
  2. Under Community, select Web Presence.
  3. Turn Channel Summaries and Channel Messages off for each channel that should stay out of web search, or for all of them. Discord's default: "If you don't change anything, public channels stay on."
  4. Edit the Landing Page, so the page search engines can show from 16 November says what you want it to say.
  5. If you want no public page at all, turn off Discoverability under Access by choosing Invite Only or Apply to Join. The server becomes a Community Server again.

If you are a member, open User Settings, select Data & Privacy, and turn off Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages. One switch covers every Discoverable Server you are in, but it only applies to messages you send after you change it.

A message sent while the setting was on can still appear until you delete it from Discord, which also removes it from Discord's web pages. Search engines keep their own copies for a while. For a page on a site you don't own, such as discord.com, Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool asks Google to update or drop its copy. On your own website, the Removals tool in Search Console does that job, as our guide to unwanted pages in Google explains.

What does the Discord messages Google search change mean for a business?

Public conversations already rank above businesses. On 26 October 2026 we searched "best italian restaurant singapore" on Google from Singapore. The first restaurant's own website came sixth, under a Reddit thread, the Michelin Guide, Tripadvisor, a food blog and a list posted on Medium.

Google results 4 to 6 for "best italian restaurant singapore", searched from Singapore on 26 October 2026. 4: The Ranting Panda, "The Best Italian Restaurants To Check Out In Singapore". 5: a Medium post, "11 Best Italian Restaurants in Singapore". 6, boxed in red: Fortuna Trattoria's own site, "Italian Pizzeria & Pasta Restaurant - Tanjong Pagar". Headline: The first restaurant website was result #6.
Google, 26 October 2026, results 4 to 6. A Reddit thread, the Michelin Guide and Tripadvisor held the three places above.

That was not a one-off. In our restaurant SEO guide, a search for "best ramen tanjong pagar" on 3 October 2026 had a Reddit thread at #1 and no restaurant's own website anywhere in the top 10. Across the main searches for 11 Singapore trades, captured between 11 August and 5 October 2026 for our AI study, 12 of the 94 results on Google's first page were forums or social media.

AI assistants linked to them far less. In the same study, ChatGPT, tested through OpenAI's API with web search on 5 October 2026, linked to forums or social media 2 times in 803 links, and Perplexity 42 times in 3,109. Our breakdown of where ChatGPT gets its information has the full count. On that evidence, a Discord thread is more likely to turn up in Google's results than in a ChatGPT answer.

From mid-December, answers written in public Discord channels can join the forum threads already in those results:

  • If you run a Discoverable Server for your product or your customers, its Server Web Page becomes a page about you that Google can show. Discord's own advice for that page is to "use words that describe your community accurately and specifically". Answers your team gives in public channels can also be found "in their own words", so check that the channels you leave on hold answers you are happy for a stranger to find.
  • If you don't run one, conversations about your trade, or your business, in other people's public servers can appear in web search, without the poster's username. You can't switch those off. You can make sure your own pages answer the same questions more clearly.

How many forum threads rank above businesses for your service?

Run this check tonight:

  1. Open a private browser window, so your own search history does not change the results.
  2. Search your service and your area the way a customer would, such as "aircon servicing tampines" or "best ramen tanjong pagar".
  3. Count the results from Reddit, HardwareZone, Facebook groups or other forums that sit above the first business's own website.
  4. Open each one and write down the question it answers. Then check whether your own website answers that question in plain words.
  5. From mid-December, run the same search with "discord" added, to see whether any server pages have started to show.

The questions in those threads are the ones customers ask before they choose. If your site answers none of them, that is where to start. Our free SEO audit starts from the same place: the searches your customers make, and who Google shows for them.

Frequently asked questions

Will my Discord messages show up on Google?

Only messages you send from mid-December 2026 in a public channel of a Discoverable Server, where the admins have left Channel Messages on and your own setting allows it. They appear without your username or avatar. DMs, group DMs and private servers are never included.

How do I stop my Discord messages appearing in Google search?

Open User Settings, then Data & Privacy, and turn off "Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages". It covers every Discoverable Server you are in, for messages you send after the change. To take down a message you sent before, delete it.

Are Discord messages searchable on Google by default?

In Singapore and most other regions, yes: the member setting starts on, and public channels stay on unless the admins change them. It starts off for accounts in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, and accounts in the teen age group can't turn it on.
