Is SEO Dead Because of ChatGPT? What 1,100 Answers Showed

ChatGPT reads websites to answer, so the work on your website still counts. What changed is that a Google first-page ranking no longer covers you by itself.

In short

  • SEO is not dead because of ChatGPT: when ChatGPT recommended Singapore businesses, 57 of every 100 links it gave went to the businesses' own websites.
  • What changed is which websites it picks. Only 6 in 100 of the websites ChatGPT linked were on Google's first page for the same trade.
  • Ahrefs found the same across 15,000 prompts in August 2025: outside Perplexity, around 8% of the pages AI assistants cited ranked in Google's top 10.
  • Our first client was ChatGPT's first pick for a cooling mattress in July 2026 while its pages averaged positions 19 to 48 on Google for "best cooling mattress singapore".

SEO is not dead because of ChatGPT. ChatGPT answers questions about businesses by searching the web and reading websites, and when we asked it who to hire in 11 Singapore trades, 57 of every 100 links it gave went to the businesses' own websites. At rankr, a Singapore SEO agency, we ran that study in October 2026, and what it changes is which pages win, not whether your website matters.

What does ChatGPT read when it recommends a business?

Of the 803 links in 330 answers from ChatGPT's API with web search, 57% went to websites of businesses in the trade, 19% to government sites, 10% to directories and review sites and 9% to "best of" lists. Reddit and social media got 2 links between them.

So the pages ChatGPT quotes are mostly the same kind of page SEO has always worked on: a business's own service pages and guides, saying what it does, where, and for how much.

Does ranking on Google's first page get you into ChatGPT?

Rarely on its own. Over ten rounds of the same questions, 6 in 100 of the websites ChatGPT linked were on Google's first page for that trade's main search (39 of 601, counting each website once per trade), and 10 in 100 for Perplexity (46 of 459). For aircon servicing, ChatGPT linked 49 websites, and 1 was on Google's first page for "aircon servicing singapore".

Our study, 50 answers per trade on 5 and 6 October 2026, ChatGPT's API with web search; Google Singapore's top 10 from Ahrefs, August to October 2026.

Ahrefs found the same at a much larger scale. In a study of 15,000 prompts published in August 2025, around 8% of the pages cited by ChatGPT and the other assistants it tested ranked in Google's top 10 for the prompt; Perplexity was the exception at 28.6%.

Yes. Asked for the best cooling mattress for hot weather on 26 July 2026, ChatGPT listed our first client, Lullaflex, first under "Best for Singapore", eight weeks after we started building its site. Between July and October, Lullaflex's pages averaged positions 19 to 48 on Google for "best cooling mattress singapore". The page ChatGPT quoted gave it facts to repeat: seven-zone latex, a cool-touch cover, a build for Singapore's heat.

Google did not stop mattering either. The same site's Google clicks went from 1 in June 2026 to 64 in September, and its first climbers were guides that each answer one narrow question.

So what still works, and what doesn't?

What still works is the core of SEO: pages Google and ChatGPT can read, each answering a question your customers ask, with your prices, areas and real proof in the text.

What works less is treating Google's first page as the whole job. Paying only for a page-one ranking leaves out most of what ChatGPT reads, and Perplexity leans on a different source again: 42 of every 100 of its links went to "best of" lists, almost all written by publishers rather than the businesses on them. That is why rankr works on Google and the AI assistants together.

Social media is not the replacement either. Google's own SEO starter guide puts social media under promoting your site, and our myths post has the sources.

How do you check where you stand?

Ask ChatGPT the question your customers ask, 10 times in temporary chats, and count how often it names you. Then open the sources under each answer: those are the pages to be on. One answer tells you little, because ChatGPT's first pick changed at least once across 10 asks for 50 of our 54 questions. The study page has the ten-minute check and every answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No. ChatGPT and other assistants answer by reading websites, and in our study 57% of ChatGPT's links went to businesses' own sites. What has changed is that a Google first-page ranking alone does not get you into AI answers.

Does ranking first on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend you?

Not by itself. Only 6 in 100 of the websites ChatGPT linked in our Singapore study were on Google's first page for the same search.

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO builds on SEO and adds work for AI answers: measuring how often assistants name you, formatting answers they can quote, and getting onto the sources they read. GEO vs AEO vs SEO covers which to do first.
